Tabula Mercātuum

Tabula Mercātuum

Taking as a point of inspiration the world atlas “Tabula Rogeriana” written and compiled by Mohamed Al-Idrisi in 1154, “Tabula Mercātuum” uses storytelling, poetic writing, and the visual vernacular of medieval maps to explore changing urban realities in contemporary Riyadh through the exploration of the city's disused malls.

Inspired by their walks in Riyadh's once-beloved shopping centers from the '80s and '90s, Adam and Hafsa Alkhudairi created a publication-artifact combining histories of the malls and their contributions to the psycho-geographies of the city with prose poetry exploring cherished memories of adolescence in Riyadh. Original illustrations for the project were designed by Australian-Egyptian illustrator Omar Houssein, who combined the medieval visual aesthietic of Al-Idrisi's atlas with visual touchpoints from the malls.
