In 50 Years or So

In 50 Years or So

Named after the French diplomat responsible for the Suez Canal, the Lessepsian Migration connected the marine ecology of the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, changing both forever. In a three-act performance coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Canal's opening, In 50 Years or So explores the legacies of its construction by looking at the integenerational migration of animal species and dance gesture. Through poetry, choreography, performance, song, and installation, the project positions dance and performance as constitutive architectural practices, staging never-before-seen archival documents chronicling the canal's history, politics, ecology, and choreographic potential. It troubles tectonics of the canal by critically examining phenomena such as the introduction of dance floors, eminent domain, excavation, and urban planning, and how these affected and continue to affect cultural heritage in Egypt and the Arabic speaking region.
